Barbara Corcoran was labeled stupid at school, graduated with straight D's, and worked 20 different jobs before she turned 23. Then her boyfriend lent her $1,000 to start a business. Years later, that same boyfriend told her she would never succeed without him. She eventually sold her company for $66 million. Corcoran grew up in a working-class family of 10 children in Edgewater, New Jersey. Money was tight, and she struggled throughout school. She had dyslexia, although she wouldn't understand the reason for her reading difficulties until much later. Teachers underestimated her intelligence. One nun told her she would always be stupid if she didn't pay attention. Her grades reinforced that judgment. She earned straight D's and entered adulthood believing she wasn't particularly smart. By 23, she had already worked approximately 20 jobs, including waitressing. Then she met Ray Simone, a real estate developer who encouraged her to try selling property in New York City. In 1973, he lent her $1,000, and they launched a real estate brokerage together. Simone owned 51% of the business. Corcoran started renting apartments, then discovered that selling properties could generate far larger commissions. She began building a team of agents and competing in Manhattan's fiercely competitive real estate market. But seven years into the partnership, her personal and professional life collapsed. Simone left her for her secretary. Their business partnership ended too. According to Corcoran, he told her she would never succeed without him. Instead of leaving real estate, she established The Corcoran Group under her own leadership. She expanded aggressively, hired agents, developed a recognizable brand, and introduced market reports that helped position her company as an authority on New York property. By 2001, The Corcoran Group had approximately 850 salespeople and generated around $97 million in annual revenue. That year, a buyer initially offered her $20 million. She refused. Corcoran demanded $66 million, partly because 66 was her lucky number. The buyer eventually agreed. She sold the company for exactly $66 million. The financial contrast was extraordinary. A woman who had struggled through school, held 20 jobs, and started with a $1,000 loan had built one of New York's leading real estate brokerages. And the man who once told her she couldn't succeed without him was no longer part of the business. Corcoran later became a prominent investor on Shark Tank, extending her career far beyond real estate. Her $66 million exit wasn't simply a business sale. It was the financial outcome of building a company after losing both her original business partnership and the relationship that helped launch it.
