Been living in my truck camper for 5 years now, traveled through all 50 states, and I still stand ten toes down on my opinion that New Mexico is one of the most underrated, wild and beautiful states to explore! #onxambassador Nearly HALF of New Mexico is public land, making it an absolute playground for outdoor adventure and wild camping! But because the LAND OF ENCHANTMENT is still so overlooked compared to other Western states, you can find a level of peace and solitude here that’s increasingly rare. And nothing beats a campsite with no one else around, and views like this! 😮⛰️ 📍The Lincoln National Forest is one of our favorite areas to get wayyy out there! We spent this past week truck camping at the base of the Capitan Mountains (where the real Smoky Bear was born), tucked amidst piñon-juniper woodland in a canyon teeming with wildlife! We fell asleep to elk bugling, coyotes yelping and owls hooting, stargazed for hours under the full moon, read in the fresh mountain breeze and spent our days hiking straight from camp. 🏕️ Spots like this are just a tap away on @onX Offroad - it’s how we find all of our campsites! Just turn on the Dispersed Camping layer to see where dispersed camping is allowed, then use the 3D map to explore the terrain, check elevation and scout out spots with the kind of views you’re looking for. I also love using the active wildfire, precipitation and temperature layers so we can plan ahead and be prepared before heading into remote areas. And I always check the cell coverage layer to see what service we can expect before committing to a campsite (especially since I work from the road). New Mexico still feels so raw and underexplored - it’s one of the few places left that makes me feel like a Wild West pioneer. And while I may not have a horse tied up outside every night… I do live in a modern-day wagon - my truck camper - roaming from place to place and chasing that same sense of freedom and adventure. Different time… same spirit. 🐴 It’s still a life where your home moves with you… where your backyard is wherever you wake up… and your days are spent chasing wild, quiet, wide-open places like this. 🌲
