@theargentgroup: Mike Repole helped build a beverage company that Coca-Cola bought for $4.1 billion. Fourteen years later, he sold another beverage business to the same buyer in a deal worth $5.6 billion. His career began nowhere near a billion-dollar boardroom. Repole grew up in Queens, New York, the son of a waiter and a seamstress. As a teenager, he stocked shelves at his uncle's grocery store, earning less than $4 an hour. He paid attention to something most people overlooked. Some drinks disappeared from the shelves almost immediately. Others sat untouched for weeks. That fascination eventually took him into beverage sales. In the late 1990s, Repole joined forces with Darius Bikoff to build Glacéau, the company behind Vitaminwater and Smartwater. They started small, with a business generating approximately $1 million in first-year sales. Repole helped build its distribution network, persuading retailers to give the unfamiliar drinks valuable shelf space. By 2007, Glacéau had hundreds of employees and had become a major force in the enhanced-water category. That year, Coca-Cola acquired the company for $4.1 billion. Repole had helped build his first billion-dollar exit. But he wasn't finished with beverages. In 2011, he partnered with Lance Collins to launch BodyArmor, a sports drink positioned as an alternative to Gatorade. The competition was enormous. Gatorade dominated the American sports drink market, backed by PepsiCo's distribution and marketing resources. BodyArmor needed something different to get noticed. Repole focused on retail distribution while the company developed relationships with professional athletes. In 2013, Kobe Bryant became an investor and later played an important role in its marketing and creative direction. Bryant's involvement helped strengthen the brand's credibility with athletes and consumers. The business expanded rapidly. In 2018, Coca-Cola acquired an initial 15% stake in BodyArmor, creating a path toward full ownership. Then came the second massive deal. In November 2021, Coca-Cola paid $5.6 billion for the remaining 85% of BodyArmor. The transaction valued the entire company at approximately $8 billion. Repole had now helped build two beverage companies acquired by Coca-Cola. Glacéau for $4.1 billion. BodyArmor at an approximately $8 billion valuation. And the financial benefits extended beyond Repole. He said that when Glacéau was sold, approximately 400 employees made more than $500,000 through their stock options. His story wasn't about selling the exact same company twice. It was about building two separate beverage businesses, challenging established competitors, and ultimately selling both to the same industry giant.
