I have a pony like this! Probably not quite as bad, but he can be very defensive towards strangers. He is really on/off with people he knows - super cuddly one minute then it’s like a switch! The minute you get too much in his personal space, or he feels threatened, or if you’re near his food, the defensiveness comes back! 😕 it’s hard but also rewarding at times, seeing him begin to trust us with things, and he doesn’t have to feel threatened. There are certain moments where you can tell he’s had some not very nice experiences with humans before!

My gelding was for sure beaten in his stable before I got him because when we first got him he was badly defensive and terrified and acted exactly like this with the cow kicking and biting and I spent hours and hours with him everyday for a year to gain his trust and finally managed too but he acts like this with strangers because of his trust issues 💗

it’s gonna get better ❤️my pony is also super sweet at times and then out of nowhere his ears are far back and he wants to bite or gets real pushy :/ we do lots of groundwork and i try do to everything as free as possible so that we both still have our personal space and he doesn’t feel threatened by me. i just really try to „read“ him and be aware of his and my own boundaries
