For 85 seconds in 1956, the largest woodpecker in the world was caught on film. William Rhein, a dentist from Pennsylvania, was camping in the Sierra Madre Occidental in Durango, Mexico. He filmed with a hand-held camera from the back of a mule. The color footage shows a female imperial woodpecker climbing and feeding on the trunks of big pines, then flying off. Campephilus imperialis grew up to 60 centimeters (2 feet) long, with a big crest. It lived in old-growth pine forests in the mountains of western Mexico. The birds largely vanished in the late 1940s and 1950s as logging destroyed those forests, and they were often shot for food and for folk remedies. Rhein's film is the last confirmed sighting of the species. A Cornell Lab of Ornithology researcher tracked the film down decades later, and a 2010 expedition to the same region found no sign of a living bird. The IUCN lists it as Critically Endangered, possibly extinct. The only known film of the world's biggest woodpecker is also the last proof it was alive. Illustration by M. Delahaye
