@kristenbreanne90: Sometimes it’s just a trip to the grocery store, and suddenly you’re watching two siblings laugh together and thinking about the life you pictured for your own child. People hear “I’m not having another” and assume the decision came easily. They don’t see how much you’ve worried, cried, or considered your child in all of it. I wish they knew how much love went into a decision they’re calling selfish. 🤍 #OnlyChild #ondanddone #oneandonly #onechild #familyof3
You aren’t selfish at all! You’re doing what is best for your baby!

Why is it assumed that this decision is made by the mom? I want a second but my husband doesn’t. I feel extra alone in this because people assume I’m the one who decided to stop at one. I respect his decision but it’s not what I would choose.

My son is SO social, the complete opposite to me. He loves being around people. I often think he would make the best big brother. However as a single parent of 38 years old, with a full time job and full financial responsibilities. I couldn’t do it again. Even if I met someone. Even if the guy said he would be the most “hands on” dad. My mental capacity, emotional capacity and physical capacity cannot handle it. I cannot be everything and more. So I do what I can. So one and done it is. Id rather do my best than attempt to do beyond what I can and end up doing worse.

I think it’s important to know your limits and if one is that limit then who cares what everyone else thinks. A mothers mental health matters more than a sibling

whats hard for me is my son is about to be 9 and he still wants a sibling. the thing is I tell him that the life he imagined with a sibling won't work that way. he wont get to build Legos with them or play ball with them the same way that 9 year age gap will hang out together.

I was once told by a guy that kinda stuck with me “your not a real mom with just one kid” that hurt me 🥺 I try not to think about it. He doesn’t know my story and why I have decided to be one and done.

As an only child, I didn’t miss anything about not having siblings until I was an adult having my own kids. I wish my kids had an aunt or uncle from me, and I wish I had a sibling to share that with. I wish I had that built in best friend to joke about our childhood with. I didn’t miss anything of that until I was an adult, my childhood was awesome btw! But because I didn’t have a sibling, I also had a tough decision to make with having a second because I didn’t know that life 😅 but my daughter is such a little mama at heart, always has been, and LOVES other kids and babies. So she was my deciding factor, that SHE needed a sibling. Now I have a 4 year old and 17 month old, both girls and they are BEST FRIENDS and heal every part of me that wishes I had a sister myself [Heartwarming][Heartwarming][Heartwarming]

Ope I thought this was about an autistic sibling and a neurotypical sibling till like halfway through cause we have the sibling but we don’t get any of those normal interactions either

My older brother traumatized me. He always threatened me with hurting me or killing my mom. He was only 5y older than me, but for me was a living nightmare being around. Suffered from a lot of anxiety just hearing him entering the room. So no, I dont want to give my baby a sibiling to terrorize neither have another baby for my current one to torture

feel this deep in my soul. if one more person says "oh come on, she needs a sibling", I may explode. the thought of going through pregnancy again, of pumping again, and not being able to give her everything because now there's two of them, the list goes on and on. I don't know if I'll ever stop thinking about it, but I don't know that I'll ever regret this decision.

Or someone makes an off hand comment to you that if you have a second, your son will have someone else to entertain him and you won’t be so exhausted. Which puts you in a spiral again about your decision, opening up the same wound you’re still trying to heal. I so desperately wish that could be our reality and i could give my son a sibling and playmate, but that isn’t our reality for so many reasons. And while the comment isn’t made with malice, it still cuts deep.

I have brother. We grew up not close. After married, he never call, so I never make a call. I have onlies. I know she will be a great sister, but the siblings relationship that I know always ended up fighting... 🤷♀️

Extremely relatable. It’s so hard. Raising children is scary and the most selfless thing a woman does. They don’t understand what all we go through just bring life to this world. I have 2 with a big age gap and I would love to have a 3rd to give my middle son a sibling closer in age that he can grow up with, but I just don’t think I can handle it. I don’t have enough support. 😢

I think it's easy to see siblings with rose coloured glasses, because that's the happy side that's easy to show. There are benefits and risks to having more than one child. Do what's best for you. Like romantic relationship content provides the highlight reel of the relationship, so does sibling content. And cute moments out and about are that, moments in time.
No one makes videos showing the jealous and acting out first child because their life was turned upside down with a second. No one shows the fights resulting in physical and emotional damage between the children. No one shows the various forms of abuse that can happen between siblings including COCSA. Or simply that siblings can dislike each other and not be "born lifelong friends."
