I loved how Curtis is happy to have saved her, but his realization that the "heroics" are not glorious and have a cost. He looks at his hands, second guesses what happened and is NOT okay with taking a life, even though it was necessary to save his friend. I LOVED that detail. Real heros due what is needed, it's not glory, it's not fame and there is always a cost. I saw the film first showing in a morning and there were not a lot of people there. It was dead quiet. It was somber.

I love that it’s also a callback to Dowager’s lesson to him at the start of the film that you don’t pick up a weapon unless you’re prepared to use it (paraphrasing).

I look at it as Curtis throughout the movie he valued life. The fact that he took a life, an animal's life, deeply traumatized him and it completely changed who the character is going forward.

I cried when Curtis killed the coyote, the fact he had to do something he really didn't want to do.. I think it's a clever way to show that even in bravery and 'good' it doesn't mean you will always do what aligns with you.. kind of like, there's no such thing as a purely good person without evil. Purely good individuals have evil they do not act upon.. Sadly Curtis had to save his friend

I could see that the battle was setting Curtis up for needing to make that decision of killing someone to protect someone else he cares about, and yet I was still devastated that he had to do it. He didn't want to kill! He's just an "odd" little kid who wants to play his fantasy games! I love that Wildwood did NOT pull its punches on the consequences of regular, everyday kids being put in such deadly situations.

I like the touch of him looking at his reflection in the sword once when he couldn't kill and the other time the sword was stained with the blood he spilt

I thought that whole sequence of events was heart breaking, not only does he see his friend die saving his life, he had to kill to safe his other friend, that poor kid went through a lot.

i LOVED that Curtis did what needed to be done but then he was heartbroken at what he had just done, he didn't have some sort of fantasy "now i can defeat 1000 coyotes!" moment, it was such a REAL moment for him

its very reminiscent of Lord of the Rings in the way that the characters can go home, but they can't go back. they've returned from their ordeal changed, for better or for worse.

it makes it even more impactful when he just lost his new friend only minutes before, felt the entire weight of what death does to those around the deceased, and still chose to take the life. I cried after he threw the sword, almost disgusted in himself, but he had to do it to save her brother. Same with him not viewing himself as a hero at the end. Phenomenal movie. Can't wait to see it again.

It needed to be done but there was a price to pay, and it was his innocence. He and Pru will never be the same after being part of and witnessing that battle. They both had to sacrifice a piece of themselves to do what needed to be done and even though the war was won, the loss of those pieces, their innocence, is something to be mourned.
