5/5 forsure deserves a few rewatches what a western period piece character dive this is Tarantino talks abt TWBB in his sky movies takeover prior to inglorious basterds’ release where he talks about all his favourite movies since he starting directing till 2009 and he has really high praise for Daniel Day-Lewis because I mean of course like the guy is literally Daniel Plainview. he becomes everyone he plays to the most literal sense, there’s not a second of hesitancy where you might question whether the character would do what he does because DDL just plays his role so incredibly realistically Tarantino in his own words asserts that there are facts in this world; there are certainties that can’t be argued. water is wet, the sun is hot, and most obviously DDL is great in this film. Famously enough he has equally high criticism for Dano’s performance in this which I feel is generally pretty disagreeable I thought Dano was brilliant as Eli, as a sniveling and weak preacher who so easily gave up on the beliefs he claimed to have lived by PTA lets the camera do a lot of the storytelling here, there’s maybe around 20min in the opening sequences of the movie where there’s no dialogue, where we are introduced to Plainview and told so much about his character and background with no words needed Tarantino did also say that while most people probably consider this PTAs magnum opus he personally prefers “the exuberance of Boogie Nights over the formalism of There Will Be Blood” having recently watched both Id probably say I prefer this heavily but regardless PTA is cinematic talent incarnate and, having only seen those two+phantom thread, im excited to run thru his entire catalogue probably w magnolia next and obaa punch drunk love etc etc
