You can’t just tell them their idea won’t work, you have to make them feel like they’ve arrived at that conclusion themselves. You can’t point out an obvious mistake without first considering how the feedback might land. And if someone senior is having a bad day, that quickly becomes everyone’s problem. It’s honestly surprising how much emotional labour goes into protecting executive egos in workplaces that claim to value psychological safety and constructive feedback. Used to get bullied by my big bosses PA. I would ignore her and then she put in a complaint that I was ignoring her (even though I actually had no reason to deal with her) and my boss told me I need to smooth the situation over because the PA was higher than me. So I pulled out all the evidence of her bullying me and she started crying victim.

Not all corporate is like that. Most but not all, I found a job I don’t have to do that. Boss doesn’t, boss’s boss doesn’t and so forth up the line. Best job I’ve ever had 🎉🎉

It is so gross, really. The fact that a huge portion of the problems faced by employees are caused by managers’ ego ànd weak spines, their personal vendettas with other managers and their inability to separate their personal selves from their professional versions. Yes, and they force us back into the office to babysit them and pretend to be their friend. Working from home really made them feel lonely and realise their existence is pointless. In the future all CEOs will be AI that just spout buzzwords while people do the real work.
