Imagine paying $28 to license your dog one year and $51 the next. Same dog. Same city. Same County animal care provider. That’s an 82% increase in Placentia. And if you’re a senior? Your annual license went from $14 to $25. Nearly 79% more. Now here’s what makes this interesting. Anaheim, Brea and Tustin all use Orange County Animal Care too. Their annual license for a spayed or neutered dog? Still $28. For qualifying seniors? Still $14. So why is Placentia charging $51? On April 21, 2026, Placentia approved a new five-year OC Animal Care agreement estimated at $487,925 annually. That’s approximately $2.44 million over five years. I understand animal care costs money. Shelters, emergency responses, animal control officers and veterinary services aren’t free. But I have questions. What did we pay under the previous agreement? What services are we actually using? Are we paying for services we don’t need? Can we adjust service levels without compromising public safety or animal welfare? And how much money does raising the senior license by $11 actually generate? Here’s something else worth knowing. Fullerton, another city using OC Animal Care, eliminated approximately $246,000 in annual shelter-construction payments under its new agreement. That’s a cost reduction without documented cuts to animal care services. Did Placentia have similar payments? Were those savings reflected in our costs? And this is part of a bigger problem. Placentia recently had to make approximately $1.46 million in budget reductions. When the City is under financial pressure, every contract, every amendment and every expense deserves scrutiny. I believe we should review what we’re already spending before asking residents to pay more. And yes, I’m particularly concerned about seniors. For some, that dog is their daily companion. Their reason to get outside. Their company when the house is otherwise quiet. An extra $11 may not sound like much to everyone. But when you’re living on a fixed income and everything else is getting more expensive, it adds up. I’m Santosh Sabnis, running for Placentia City Council District 2. I believe residents deserve to see the numbers before they’re handed another increase. Here’s my question: Should cities have to show where they’ve tried to save money before raising fees on residents? Tell me what you think in the comments. #placentiacalifornia #Placentia #citycouncil #seniors #petfee
