A few days ago, Elijah & I were at the Supermarket. As we walked in the door, he got in front of the monitor & began waving and looking at his image moving around… as he tends to do. The store was crowded & people in line as well as some at the register, began staring. It was a little irritating but far from the type of nuisance it used to be. But days later, it made me stop to think about the people over the years who would gawk or stare so intently that you could swear you could hear them talking.. even if their mouths were closed. But I also stopped to think about the people who in the middle of autism’s behavior, meltdown or awkward social situation, went out of their way to say, “it’s okay, you’re good” or “ my child has autism too”. To those people… thank you. To those who struggle to give the grace that they would want if the tables were turned…thank you as well. To anyone reading this..
