@drmurrayhospicevet: Nine minutes. That's how quickly everything changed for one family today. An owner reached out to schedule an in-home euthanasia appointment for their beloved dog. Just nine minutes later, their dog had passed away. I don't share this story to place blame or make anyone feel guilty. I share it because dogs are incredibly good at hiding pain, and the signs of decline can be so easy to mistake for normal aging. Sleeping more. Eating less. Slowing down. Struggling to get comfortable. Sometimes these changes happen gradually. Other times, things progress much faster than anyone could anticipate. This is why I share what I see as an end-of-life veterinarian. Not to scare pet owners, but to educate them, help them recognize subtle changes, and encourage conversations about quality of life before a crisis occurs. Because every pet deserves comfort, dignity, and love in their final chapter. And every family deserves compassion, not judgment. Please share this with someone who has a senior pet. It might help them recognize something they hadn't noticed before. #SeniorDogs #PetHospice #DogHealth #VeterinaryMedicine #DrMurrayHospiceVet

My 2.5 year old Sphynx cat had dilated cardiomyopathy. I had scheduled in home euthanasia. The day he was supposed to be eithanized he started doing really well. I made the decision to reschedule the euthanasia so I could have another day or two with him. At the time his appointment was supposed to be he started declining rapidly. I called them back to try to get the appt back but was unable to. Instead I had to rush him to the emergency vet to be euthanized. I was so heartbroken and angry with myself. I just wanted another day, but I was being selfish. I will never do this ever again.

My soul dog got to the point where he couldnt get up on his own, but I helped him and he seemed pretty ok. Then he needed ramps, so I built ramps. Then he'd fall over in the yard and couldnt get back up and one time was stuck like that in the rain bc I was gone. So i closed access to the dog door. Then he couldnt get up to go outside to relieve himself, so I'd start putting him in the shower. It just became our life because in between all this he still chased bubbles, he still had his fancy prance at times, he was still acting like the sweet playfull, alert boy I shared my life with for 13yrs. I accomodated everything because I needed him and I was able to make it work. But then he had a seizure and I knew he was letting me know I had to stop. I had to stop forcing him to stay when he needed to go. So we put the sofa cushions on the floor and had a campout and the vet came to the house the next day. Outside, under the shade of his favorite tree with his bf tucked against the fence a few feet away; there, but giving us our space.
Hardest decision Ive ever made but he finaly told me I needed to let go. I think he held on longer to let me try all the things I did because he knew I needed to.

I wish my vet had shared more about recognizing when it was time. I just assumed she’d stop wagging her tail and we’d know, but she was a happy lab. I still kick myself almost a year later for waiting too long.

This is so crucial. Not just for old age but when your dog has a terminal disease. Finding that sweet spot between too early and too soon is so difficult but better that they have a gentle at home passing than a potentially traumatic, painful death, possibly in a strange place among strangers (vet or emergency hospital). My dog had laryngeal paralysis and was likely going to die via a traumatic choking to death. He already couldn’t walk nor get comfortable unless he was heavily medicated, so we chose the moment after his 14th birthday where we gave real cake and lots of love. It’s the hardest decision an owner can make. Is it too soon? But in the end at least I know he went peacefully surrounded by loved ones.

We took our dog to the emergency vet… they suspected a brain tumor. We took him home with plans to take him to a neurologist two days later (bracing for the worst). He died within an hour of us getting home from the emergency vet. I wholeheartedly believe that he knew and wanted to pass in our home rather than at the vet’s office

my 13 year old dog has 3 legs he went from standing to get a drink to sitting, sitting to eat to laying down to eat and playing tug of war to not playing at all but still happy, eatting and drinking ( he had bad arthritis in his back leg we put him down on Monday. I would rather him go on his last good day then on his worst

A day early is better than a day too late. they hold on for you 💜 I've made this decision 4 times for my personal dogs, and 3 for dogs I taken in as seniors. it's not easy, but if you're doing more for them than they can do for themselves it's time..

Just had this difficult conversation… we know it’s time. It’s happened once before. He looks at us with such sad eyes. Progressive Lymphoma. One of the hardest choices to ever have to make. He is so loved and already missed.

I just had to put my soul dog down 2 weeks ago she was diagnosed with an aggressive cancer a month ago and she was really sick but looking at her you would never know. Made the decision even harder because she seemed “normal” but it was the best thing I could do for her

My girl is 15yrs and 6 months. She is a pit - cattle dog mix, a stray I picked up years ago. She has been healthy as a horse until the last month. I watch her like a hawk and every change, I clock. We have been to our vet twice this month. I am working with vet to ensure quality until it’s actually time. They can go down so fast.

This is my last picture with my best girl, she showed so many small signs that I knew meant her time was coming and she went down hill so suddenly and so quickly. im so glad my vet prepared me for this moment. while it was so hard, I understood it was better for her to not be in pain

the dog may have realized its ok to cross over. the dog could probably feel that the family was ready to say its OK buddy you dont need to be in pain anymore and can let go. dogs can sense things we will never understand.
