Illustrative Math...let them explore first, then what? Spend time in a small group to reteach and address misconceptions. 😩 ugh

We should not be doing a math concept for one day and moving on!! Students should have to show mastery. Or near mastery!

In affluent areas, people are paying for direct instruction outside of school to keep their kids able to learn in school. The current way doesn't serve anyone. It's why places like Sylvan and Kumon stay packed.

I do direct instruction Math. We need a. Overhaul to the standards. Too much too soon. Build a better foundation and then add to it will solve most of our issues. Why are we doing 2 step word problems in 2nd grade?

Been in Education for over 15 years.... Never have I ever wanted kids to self-discover in math. Walk them kids through that mess and TELL/SHOW them how to THINK through the problem.

I never stopped teaching direct instruction. I teach it. You do it, again and again and again. You have to practice.

One of my issues with this entire debate is it always feels all or nothing. We can use direct instruction and we can have inquiry. For example, today I was teaching some equation solving strategies. It’s true, students wouldn’t come up with it on their own, but that doesn’t mean I have to resort to direct instruction immediately. I opted to show students a worked example and ask: “What do you think this person did? Do you agree with it? Why do you think they did that move?” We can discuss student ideas before I formalize it explicitly and have students practice it. I use direct instruction AND inquiry. There’s no need for just one approach, students can reason and think for themselves, but the teacher also can step in and launch their instruction from where students are at.

I’ve never NOT used direct instruction in math. I’m glad it’s making a come back. This, paired with rote memorization and learning standard algorithms after teaching the concepts, is essential. Do it over and over until it’s boring for the students.

Me sitting at my table with 4 kids while the rest are in workshop half doing the work, talking about their weekend or doing the math completely wrong is useless.

Middle School math teacher here. I have used direct instruction every year of my 33 years in math instruction. I always have the highest scores in the building so they leave me alone! It’s not what they want me to do, but they can’t argue with my results!
