@isittherightword: Award shows used to celebrate real cultural shifts, but this year’s VMAs made it painfully obvious how pay-to-play the system has become. Between questionable 'external' awards and making the entire room sit through over-promoted music video debuts, it feels like pop culture is literally being force-fed to us. Meanwhile, the actual songs and artists dominating the culture were nowhere to be found on that stage. The massive disconnect between who actually gets rewarded versus what people are actually listening to is officially at an all-time high.
