@5th_with_ms.y: Is the lack of homework (accountability) what has led to student apathy? I’m curious to hear your thoughts! #teacherproblems #teachersoftiktok #parents #fyp #viral
As a teacher I didn’t see the value in hw. Then I started helping my neighbors kid with theirs and the value became so apparent to me. It shows the parent in real time what their kid is learning and what they are struggling with.

YES. I worked at a school that didn’t allow homework and now I work at one that does (not for a grade tho) and the students actually pay attention more and care about making sure they get their homework done and will even ask “is this like what is on our homework tonight?” They take more accountability for their learning.

I know if I give them homework they will just use A.I.

Students don’t have planners anymore! Don’t have to have their families sign it! I try to assign study sessions instead of saying homework and I still get push back! I CARE TOO MUCH and families don’t care enough to

I still give DAILY homework. For 3rd grade they just have a math worksheet that directly reviews the math lesson from that day, write 2 sentences using an assigned vocabulary word from the reading text of the week, and get parents to sign their packet stating they read for at least 20 minutes that night. SO many parents fight me on it because "the math is too hard (it's multiplication strategies and practice for the first 10 weeks), they forgot to sign, they left it at home/schoo/lost it, or just disagree with giving homework at all." Unfortunately, we are only allowed to give it as a "responsibility" grade on the report card as an E/S/N because we can't guarantee WHO is doing it at home. It's exhausting!

I agree as a 32 year teacher about to retire. You are spot on.

Yes! As a parent and a teacher! My highest achieving students are consistent with homework because I DO send homework home. As a parent, doing homework with my daughter lets me see what areas she’s struggling with!

My son is in first grade and in a dual language spanish program. We have a lot of HW every night and we take it really seriously. He has classmates whose parents complain about it, and many of them didn’t complete the kindergarten HW or take it seriously. Those kids are struggling to keep up and my son is above grade level in math and reading. He also has ADHD, so it’s not like he’s the best with attention either. I know there was that weird study about HW not helping, but I really disagree, it’s exactly what you are saying. The reps and consistency as well as the parent involvement, help!

You nailed it when you said "The parents actually cared." My parents this year do the homework for their kids so the kids aren't inconvenienced. And the parents use AI. I got an answer that was word for word from the answer key. Had to have gotten it online.

Homework was the link between what is happening at school and home. I think you are onto something here! I have had parents flat out say at open house that they won't be doing homework at home, so don't bother sending it!! But then they want to know what is being taught!!

I agree!! The number of times I got home, looked at my homework, and thought “shoot, I need to pay attention tomorrow 😬” and then I showed up the next day and TRIED! They’re not having that “oh no” moment, which I think is a hard but healthy lesson to learn and stay accountable for!

Agreed. A lot of the issues we have comes from a misunderstanding and overgeneralization of Hattie’s research. Homework was on the list of ineffective strategies. Maybe it was ineffective for what they were looking at, but it served a purpose. Just like leveled classes.

I don’t grade homework. It negatively impacts the students who don’t have parents at home to help them. Especially elementary students. Also, it isn’t a good method to assess understanding. The parents or a sibling could easily tell the student what to write. I send home homework as additional practice only.

I hate homework 😩 After Covid and my kid doing work at home I can’t with homework— plus 3 kids, sports and a deployed husband it’s hard to have to do the work with each kid (2 young ones that literally couldn’t do it alone)

100%! And how many young adults are getting into the work place and people are saying they cannot self direct, take training and instructions and go accomplish the task and bring back completed results that meet expectation. The time management, problem solving, paying attention, and being able to repeat this process over and over and build skills that come along with it.
