@polishedpromoted: We’re two corporate working moms building a community of polished, intentional women who are trying to figure it all out while building careers and raising kids. We’ve learned a lot along the way and want to share the things that have helped us succeed, whether that’s navigating corporate life, growing your career, or just surviving the working mom season without losing yourself in the process. So glad to connect with other women building something of their own! 🫶🏼
The higher you climb, the less honest the room becomes. If everyone suddenly agrees with you, consider whether you've become wiser or just more expensive to contradict.

Get recommendations from the people whose actually doing the work. Projects go crazy because management are making decisions in meetings without including the people that really count.

I have said this, you may be qualified for the position and you may be hired in for the position, but you should work every single position that reports to your new position at least for two months so you understand what goes into the work

Don’t be intimidated by lower level staff that could potentially be more qualified. Let them grow, let them teach you. Appreciate them. Give them opportunities for leadership because if you don’t you’ll lose that team member who was probably the best one. And yes I finally left and am now a Director.

I have said this for years: “yes, I do play favorites. And you could be my favorite too if you showed up every day and did the same amount of work. I have no limit to how many favorites I have and the role is open to everyone.”

It’s not about how hard you work, it’s about the value of the work you do and who knows about it.

Keep logs. Date, time and outcome. HR was never implemented to protect you. It’s there to mitigate issues before becoming worst for the business. In short, it’s there to protect the business.

DOCUMENT EVERY FREAKING CONVERSATION WITH YOUR BOSS. Follow up with an email “hey just wanted to recap our conversation so we are “aligned”… blah blah blah”. It will save you.

Stop with the team building and “fun” events. I just want you to do my work and go home.

Document your impact - not just your activity. Keep a running list of your accomplishments throughout the year. By the time your performance review comes around, you'll have forgotten half of what you've contributed. Don't rely on your manager to remember it for you.

I’m in HR. I tell people “play the game. Be nice to everyone, get to the job you want and then you can do what you want. The higher the title the easier the work “

HR is not your friend, they protect the highest title in the room… so if you complain, you put an X on your back (unless someone higher paid agrees with who you are complaining about)

Sometimes, people can be genuinely wonderful individuals and great friends, but that doesn’t necessarily translate into being effective employees or capable leaders.

We’ve had 100% turnover in three years. One employees name was said at every exit. That person is the reason for the lack of growth even if they bring in the most revenue on paper.
