MY MANAGER CALLED ME INTO HER OFFICE FIVE MINUTES BEFORE MY SHIFT ENDED. I THOUGHT I WAS ABOUT TO BE FIRED. Instead, she asked me one question. “Do you know why your colleague has been taking pictures of your desk?” I honestly thought she was joking. It was 4:55 p.m. on a Thursday. I had already packed my laptop charger into my bag and was mentally halfway home. Anyone working in the UK knows that last five minutes of a shift. You are still physically at work, but your brain has already entered the train, bus or car. I looked at my manager. “What pictures?” She closed the office door. “Sit down.” That sentence alone finished me. I had been working for the company for almost two years. I had never had a disciplinary issue. My attendance was good. My performance was good. So naturally, my mind started running through everything I had done that week. Had I sent the wrong email? Had I made a mistake on a customer’s account? Had somebody complained? My manager pulled out her phone. She showed me a photograph. It was my desk. My notebook was open. My computer screen was visible. And standing beside my desk was my colleague, Sharon. I immediately recognised the picture. “What is she doing?” “That’s what we’re trying to establish.” Apparently, Sharon had taken several photographs over the previous month. Different days. Different times. Always my desk. Sometimes my screen. Sometimes documents I had left beside my laptop. I was shocked. I asked my manager why nobody had told me earlier. She said they hadn’t wanted to accuse anyone without evidence. Then she asked me something even stranger. “Has Sharon ever asked you about your work?” I thought about it. Yes. Actually, quite often. She regularly asked me how I completed certain tasks. Which system I used. How I organised my workload. Which manager approved certain things. At the time, I thought she was simply trying to learn. Then my manager showed me another photograph. This one wasn’t of my desk. It was a screenshot of an email. An email I had sent to my manager three weeks earlier. Sharon wasn’t copied into it. I stared at the screen. “How did she get this?” My manager said, “That’s exactly what we’re investigating.” The following morning, Sharon wasn’t at work. Neither was my manager. By lunchtime, everyone was whispering. Then I received a message from Sharon. “Please don’t believe everything they’re telling you.” I didn’t reply. Five minutes later, another message arrived. “I was trying to protect you.” That made absolutely no sense. I called her. She didn’t answer. Later that afternoon, my manager called me into another meeting. This time HR was there. They explained that someone had been sending confidential internal information outside the company. They initially suspected Sharon. But the investigation had uncovered something else. Some of the information had come from my workstation. I immediately thought I was finished. Then HR said, “We know you didn’t send it.” I was confused. “So who did?” My manager looked at me. “That’s what we need your help with.” Apparently, somebody had been accessing my workstation after I left. Not remotely. Physically. Someone who knew my password. Someone who knew my routine. Someone who knew exactly when I went for lunch. Then HR showed me the access records. The login happened almost every day. Usually between 12:35 and 12:50. My lunch break. I suddenly remembered something. There was only one person who regularly stayed around my desk during lunch. And it wasn’t Sharon. It was someone I had trusted completely. The person who had been covering my workload while I was away. I told HR the name. Nobody spoke. Then my manager quietly said, “We already suspected him.” The shocking part? He wasn’t stealing information to make money. He had been changing people’s records so that certain employees would appear to be underperforming. And I was one of the people he wanted removed. When HR showed me the final evidence, I understood w My colleague had been applying for a promotion. And my performance was one of the reasons he wasn’t getting it. 🥺🥺😩💔
