Honestly this study isn’t very well put together, or at least not enough information provided. Drop sets aren’t bad when short on time, but straight sets are still superior - In this study, the reps aren’t standardized, no clue what exercises were done to know if they’re a lot of the same muscle group or if the particular exercise of choice is quite fatiguing, don’t know the rest periods so how well was fatigue being controlled overall? - What we do know. CNS fatigue hinders motor unit recruitment. High threshold recruitment = high level mechanical tension. The longer duration of exercise, the more cytokine release. The more contractions, more calcium-ion accumulation, which would lead to excitation-contraction coupling failure. - Overall the one drop set group basically is the group that saw far less CNS fatigue compared to the 3 set group training everything to failure. But this doesn’t mean drop sets are more stimulating than straight sets. Force production is higher with straight sets, so there’s no real argument here. - Nobody should be doing 27 sets to failure in a single session. Pretty dumb.
