always pay yourself first. set it up so that money is pulled from your check and into high yield savings accounts, roth ira and your employers Ira. every time you get a raise, you take that money and bump your percentages up. learning the difference between want and need is huge too. after i pay off a car I keep making the monthly payments into a savings account to help with car expenses and my next down payment.

I see this all the time and consider myself kinda lucky. My small podunk public school system started teaching us financial responsibility by 6th grade all through HS. Including full day assemblies that brought in local business's to help us do a mock "living on your own" day. We had to go to local business's and purchase necessities such as rent, internet, phone, ect. tossed in unnecessary things like ice cream, jewelery, ect. We even had disasters called out throughout the day to teach us about unexpected things happening. If your day ended and you still had "money in the bank" you got little prizes.
