@epic.shutter.photography: $1.05 million in federal and state funding has been approved to acquire three at-risk homes, threatened by coastal erosion and potential collapse, including The Black Pearl. The three homes have been identified for voluntary acquisition and demolition through a federally funded disaster mitigation program. The project will receive $793,000 from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and an additional $258,000 from the state of North Carolina, for a total of $1.05 million, according to Barton Grover, Dare County’s grants and waterways administrator. No funding is required from Dare County. The three properties are photographed in this post: 22909 N.C. Highway 12 (The Black Pearl), 24225 Ocean Drive and 23236 Sea Oats Drive. Although the funding has been awarded, the purchases are not finalized. Grover said the remaining steps include property appraisals, acceptance of purchase offers by homeowners, and confirmation that demolition costs fall within the approved FEMA budget. North Carolina Emergency Management will administer the project on Dare County’s behalf through its State-Centric Hazard Mitigation Program. #blackpearl #outerbanks #rodanthe #oceanfront #erosion

So many thoughts as we still struggle after a year. We never wanted our home to be collateral damage but last year after 20 homes fell the state never even declared a state of emergency. Best wishes to the homeowners.

Can't they move them back to another lot? It would be a shame to lose the Black Pearl!

Just curious, in the 2nd photo, why did they only choose the one blue house circled and not the 5 houses on either side of it? My heart goes out to all of you living through this 💔

Not the black pearl! She’s unbowed, unbent and unbroken! At least the sea itself won’t be able to lay claim to her.

move the black pearl not demolish her. so sickening that you are doing this instead of moving her to safe ground inland not a sandbar...I will not ever say I am happy to see her go...maybe we should all pull together and surround her until we get approval to move her not destroy her....STAND PEARL STRONG...WHO IS WITH ME?
