In April 1976, Frank Sinatra took a photo backstage at the Westchester Premier Theatre in Tarrytown, NY with some of his closest friends. Standing, from left to right: 1. Paul Castellano The future boss of the Gambino crime family succeeded Carlo Gambino in 1976 and became one of the most powerful Mafia leaders in America. On December 16, 1985, he was shot dead outside Sparks Steak House in Manhattan in a murder plot orchestrated by John Gotti. 2. Gregory DePalma A Gambino crime family captain, DePalma was a silent partner in the Westchester Premier Theatre, which became embroiled in a major financial fraud scandal. He served prison time for fraud and later racketeering, and died in federal custody. 3. Frank Sinatra The legendary singer with over 150 million records sold. Sinatra died of a heart attack on May 14, 1998, at age 82. 4. Thomas Marson Marson was involved in the Westchester Premier Theatre’s financial scandal and was among those charged in the case. His trial was separated from the others because of health problems, and he subsequently pleaded guilty to charges connected to the schemes. 5. Carlo Gambino One of the most influential Mafia bosses in American history, Gambino led the crime family that bears his name and selected Castellano as his successor. He died of natural causes, reportedly following a heart attack, at his Massapequa, Long Island, home just months after the photograph was taken. 6. Jimmy Fratianno Known as Jimmy the Weasel, Fratianno was a powerful West Coast Mafia figure who admitted involvement in numerous murders during his criminal career. He eventually became a government informant and testified against fellow mobsters, entering witness protection before dying of natural causes in 1993. 7. Salvatore Spatola Spatola was a Mafia figure associated with the Gambino organization. 8. Joseph Gambino Carlo Gambino’s son Joseph was involved in the garment-trucking business. He pleaded guilty to antitrust violations involving the garment-trucking industry and avoided prison under a plea agreement. 9. Richard Fusco Known as Richie “Nerves” Fusco, he was involved in the financial operations surrounding the Westchester Premier Theatre and became a defendant in the resulting fraud case. Surely, Mr. Sinatra was shocked to learn later on that so many of his best friends were associated with organized crime.
