Did you know strawberry leaves grow in threes? They remind me of the shamrock, and they carry their own magic and symbolism. Often associated with healing and positive energy, these little leaves grow close to the earth, embodying its grounding presence and little fruitful gifts. And, of course, for many of us, they evoke the sweetness of long, warm summer days, looking for tiny berries hidden beneath the green leaves. This little strawberry dish was created by pressing real strawberry leaves and flowers into soft clay. Even the strawberry imprint is from a firm unripe strawberry. My strawberry plants grow in a raised vegetable bed just outside my studio, and I love peeking in on them whenever I’m outdoors. There’s something so beautiful about the fanlike pattern of the leaves’ veins and the way color settles into every little contour of their imprints. Once the dish is shaped, I color the botanical patterns, and then I cover it with clear glaze and fire it in my electric pottery kiln. Then comes the gold accent, which requires another firing to melt and bond the gold to the surface. Each piece goes through three firings in total, and every firing takes a full day to reach temperature, followed by another 24 hours of cooling. So you can imagine my kilns are always either heating up or cooling down! They are the quiet workhorses of my studio! My kilns are raised on legs, and in a covered outdoor part of my studio. There are actually two cute lizards that like to come hang out in the space under my kilns to soak up the warmth! One is an alligator lizard and one is a western fence lizard. Sometimes they bump into each other and surprise themselves! I’m thinking I need to create a lizard piece soon to honor them! #satisfying #pottery #botanicalart
