How scary imagine if you’re one of the 12,000 people that work there and actually understand this place.

i just want to let everyone know that is required to report any incident like this, regardless of the severity, so it always come across way scarier than it is. this specific incident was a small fire and there was not a contamination issue. please don’t fear the savannah river site!

It shuts down roads and above because it’s procedure. Also they have to inform the public when a site area emergency is declared. If we were in another country we may never know when something like that happens. You can praise the USNRC for that.

that's pretty crazy because multiple places are reporting different information one says radioactive contaminants outside the safety zone

That is incorrect. There was no “massive radioactive release”. The fire was quickly contained and everything is fine. Also SRS does not make bombs at least not right now. Nor have they. They had active reactors a longtime ago that have been shut down and sealed. They have a video on YouTube and they offer tours. This is coming from someone who lives down the road and has many friends that work there.

This was nothing I lived through 3 mile island in 1979 living in Jackson now in the shadow of the site the safeguard and protocols they have are insane. Nothing to worry about.

What we know about the recent incident at the federal Savannah River Site in South Carolina is that a Site Area Emergency was declared on Wednesday evening after a fire broke out inside a single room at the Savannah River National Laboratory. To handle the situation safely, officials quickly instituted strict precautions, sheltering nearby workers and briefly restricting air, rail, river, and vehicular traffic. Thankfully, the blaze was successfully extinguished, only one employee suffered minor injuries, and rigorous radiological surveys confirmed no detectable levels of contamination outside the facility, allowing the complex to return to normal operations later that night. What we don't know yet is the exact cause of the fire or the specific radioactive materials involved during the initial unfiltered ground-level release classification. Historically, this Cold War-era complex was built in the 1950s to manufacture plutonium pits and tritium for nuclear weapons, and today it focuses on environmental cleanup and nuclear waste management. As Albert Einstein once beautifully observed, "Peace cannot be kept by force; it can only be achieved by understanding." 🕊️It is comforting to see that stringent safety protocols worked exactly as intended to keep the local community safe. 🛡️✨

I’d like to be told immediately, but unfortunately, with all the propaganda we are dealing with. I doubt we would be told to way late.

That’s the thing about radiation is that you won’t know it’s hurting you till it’s too late. Immediate injuries are usually never present only after about 6-8 hours then you’ll know unless they were exposed to very high doses of radiation then you’ll know right away.

It was a small fire in a lab that was quickly contained. No radiological release.
