I’m Australian so haven’t grown up with Halloween but it started to get more popular ~15 years ago or so. My tip is do the best face paint you can and practice beforehand, get the coloured hair sprays, it will do a lot of heavy lifting for your kid’s costumes 😂

My son was a construction road. Black jogging suit, taped little yellow broken lines up the legs and chest of sweater (lines on road) and sewed little tonka trucks in each lane. Painted face as stop sign and made an orange safety cone as hat.
