Theopetra Cave had sheltered humans for thousands of generations. Fires had burned beneath its stone ceiling, children had slept against its walls, and ancient footprints had hardened into the dust. But some footprints did not belong to humans. During an excavation, an archaeologist discovered a narrow passage hidden behind a collapsed section of limestone. Crawling inside, he entered a tunnel untouched by daylight for thousands of years. The passage descended deep into the mountain. The air grew colder, and his lamp revealed strange footprints in the dust. They resembled human prints, except they were impossibly long and narrow. Then he noticed something disturbing. The footprints pointed toward him. He continued until the tunnel opened into a chamber covered in hundreds of scratches. At its centre stood a circle of blackened stones surrounding a shallow depression filled with small bones, carefully arranged like sleeping children. Beneath them, carved into the limestone, was a shape resembling a doorway. He photographed everything and returned with a team the following morning. But the passage seemed narrower, and the chamber lay farther away than his measurements indicated. The bones had vanished. Only the blackened stones remained, strangely warm to the touch. Unable to forget the footprints, the archaeologist examined photographs from earlier excavations. In one image, taken years before his discovery, he spotted the same strange impression near the cave entrance. Behind it stood a tall figure with impossibly long limbs and a head nearly touching the ceiling. The figure had never appeared in the original field notes. That night, he returned alone. The hidden passage stood open. From deep inside came the sound of stones scraping together. He crawled downward, breathing air that smelled of ancient smoke. His lamp flickered as he entered the chamber. Something crouched inside the blackened circle. Its skin was grey as limestone, and its folded limbs seemed far too long for its body. Its face was smooth except for a vertical slit stretching from forehead to chin. The slit slowly opened. Inside was a darkness deeper than the cave itself. The archaeologist turned to flee, but the passage behind him had become a solid wall. The creature rose. Its head struck the ceiling, yet it continued unfolding, its spine bending in ways no living skeleton could endure. Then it stepped forward. Fresh footprints appeared in the dust, one after another, approaching him. His lamp went out. By morning, the cave was silent. Searchers found his equipment beside a trail of footprints leading directly into solid rock. There were no prints coming back. Years later, another excavation uncovered a thin layer of ash beneath the ancient floor. Within it lay a perfectly preserved human footprint. Beside it was another impression, far larger, with six elongated toes. Both prints faced the entrance. Deep beneath the stone, something scratched patiently at the earth.
