It's always insecure men. If they're fragile, and they start feeling like their partner is better than them in some way, they'll belittle her. Whether it's because they think she'll leave if ahe suddenly realizes she's "better" (which is an anxious scenario, not a realistic one a lot of times), he doesn't want to feel emasculated in front of other men (which is a mix of toxic masculinity and poor self-confidence), or he just wants someone to feel superior to, making his girlfriend feel small is simply the easiest way to make their immediate feelings better, even if it's worse for the both of them in the long run. Obviously not including men unfortunately suffering from cluster B disorders, but secure men don't do that sort of stuff
