23 May 2026: I had the honour of attending the annual Omagongo Festival at Onamega in the Uukwambi Traditional Authority, a beautiful celebration of culture, unity and heritage. 🇳🇦✨ Omagongo, also known as omaongo or omaango in different Oshiwambo dialects, is the traditional fermented drink made from the marula fruit. For generations, Aawambo communities have gathered during marula season to prepare and share this special drink, a tradition deeply rooted in hospitality, storytelling, unity and indigenous knowledge. The festival rotates yearly between the eight Aawambo traditional authorities, with each palace taking its turn to host the nation. This year, it was Uukwambi’s turn to welcome Namibia. 🌳🍶 The festival is more than just a celebration of marula wine, it is about preserving our identity, bringing communities together, honouring our elders and passing traditions on to younger generations. In fact, Omagongo was recognised by UNESCO in 2015 as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. 🌍 One of the most beautiful moments of the day was seeing our President, alongside dignitaries such as SWAPO Secretary General Sophia Shaningwa and Chief Justice Peter Shivute, planting ombango/marula trees as a symbol of preserving our culture and protecting future generations. 🌱 The atmosphere was incredible; traditional songs, dancing, networking, laughter and reconnecting with so many familiar faces. I also had the pleasure of meeting up with friends and acquaintances, including Mr Knowledge Katti and his team. It truly reminded me how cultural events like these continue to unite Namibians from all walks of life. ❤️🇳🇦 Culture is our identity. Tradition is our pride. Omagongo lives on. 🍃 #OmagongoFestival #Omagongo2026 #Uukwambi #hellanghifindaka #namibiantiktoker🇳🇦 The Omagongo Festival rotates among the eight Aawambo traditional authorities and celebrates the traditional marula drink and cultural heritage.
