She had been in and out of psychiatric wards. Her family knew she was struggling. They didn't know how badly. A week before the killing, the baby's father moved out. He said Sanchez had postpartum depression and had told him she was schizophrenic. He said she refused to take her medication. On July 20, she was hospitalized for depression. She was released less than a day later. Six days later, she was living at her mother's house in San Antonio. Her sister, Priscilla Garcia, was there with her two children, ages 5 and 7. They were asleep. At approximately 5 a.m., Priscilla woke up to screaming. She called 911. She told the dispatcher her sister had been hearing voices, that she kept bringing the baby to her, acting strangely. When police arrived, Otty Sanchez was sitting on the couch. She had stabbed herself in the torso. She had sliced her own throat. She was screaming: "I killed my baby! I killed my baby!" They found Baby Scotty in a bedroom. San Antonio Police Chief William McManus addressed reporters. He appeared visibly uncomfortable. He said: "It's too heinous for me to describe it any further."
