@beyond.naija: 72 years ago, a Yoruba wedding took place in the heart of London. On October 4, 1954, Miss Christie Bola and Mr St. Matthew Daniel were married at a Methodist church in Hampstead, North London. It was six years before Nigeria's independence. The footage, attributed to British Movietone, captured a ceremony that blended two worlds. A Christian wedding in one of London's most affluent neighbourhoods. After the vows, the couple paid their respects to Chief Shalenke, who lived in the UK and stood in for the bride's father. a pan of water was poured at the bride's feet, a custom reported to symbolise washing away past burdens and welcoming her into her new home with peace. Followed with a symbolic payment of money, in line with tradition. the couple, dressed in traditional attire, joined their guests in dance. Thousands of Nigerians lived in Britain in the 1950s, and moments like this show how they carried their customs with them. Even far from home, family, respect for elders and tradition came first. Wedding customs travel. The ceremony of washing the feet of a newly wedded wife in Yoruba culture does not "symbolyse washing away of sin" as being said by the english man.
The cultural practice represents the newly married wife is entering the husband's household on a cool ground of good omen. She steps into the family on a platform of peace and good fortunes for the entire extended family of which she has become part of them. Another way of expaining it is that her feet is bringing good success and blessings into the household.

Jesus Christ as the Husband, washed the feet of the Apostles represent the church his bride. He paid the price with his blood. A lot of Yoruba traditional can be seen rooted in the Bible.
