12 SIGNS OF COLON CANCER MOST PEOPLE MISS It often stays quiet until it's advanced, which is exactly why these signs matter. 1. Blood when you go The colour tells you where it's coming from. A tumour on the left side of the colon damages the lining and gives bright red blood in the stool. A tumour on the right side bleeds slowly, gut bacteria have time to digest the blood, and the stool comes out black, tarry and foul-smelling. 2. Pencil-thin stools Stool has to squeeze past the tumour. The bigger it grows, the thinner the stool gets. This shows up most with tumours on the left side. 3. Tiredness that won't lift One of the most common symptoms of colon cancer. The cancer itself changes how your body runs, and you feel drained no matter how much you rest. 4. Feeling like you never finish With a tumour in the rectum, you keep feeling the urge to go, and after you do, it feels like something is still there. The body senses the growth as unfinished business. 5. Your bowel habits suddenly flip A lifetime of normal habits, then out of nowhere, diarrhoea swinging to constipation and back. It looks like IBS, but in someone over 50 it's a red flag. Left-sided tumours cause this. Right-sided ones rarely do. 6. Low iron Bright red blood, black stools, and hidden bleeding you never see all drain your iron. The result is iron-deficiency anaemia: • Pale skin • Tiredness • Shortness of breath • Strange cravings for non-food things like ice or dirt (pica) Iron-deficiency anaemia in an older person always needs a check for colon cancer. 7. A lump in the lower right belly Split your belly into four squares around the navel. A tumour on the right side of the colon sometimes grows big enough to be felt in the lower right square. 8. Losing weight without trying The cancer kills your appetite and burns through huge amounts of energy. The weight drops off on its own. 9. A blocked bowel Colon cancer is the top cause of large bowel blockage in adults, mostly from left-sided tumours. When the tumour closes the gut: • Little or no stool gets through • You can't pass gas • Your belly swells with trapped gas • Nausea and vomiting set in as everything backs up A fever on top of this means the bowel has burst or lost its blood supply, and bacteria are spilling into the belly. That's an emergency. 10. Weakness Your strength fades, often because the blood loss and low iron leave your muscles short on oxygen. 11. Signs it has spread Colon cancer travels to three main places: • The liver, through the blood, bringing signs of liver disease • The lungs, bringing breathing problems, though sometimes nothing at all • The lymph nodes above the collarbone, which swell into lumps you feel 12. Belly pain The most common reason people with colon cancer walk into a clinic. It comes from the tumour partly or fully blocking the gut, or from the tumour pushing into the lining of the belly.
