If you care for a loved one for at least thirty five hours a week, you may get Carer's Allowance. But for years, there has been a cruel catch. Earn just one penny over the weekly limit, and you lose the whole benefit. Campaigners called it the cliff edge scandal. Now, Chancellor John Healey says the cliff edge is going. Under the plan announced before the Budget, the benefit will taper instead. Earn over the limit, and you lose just one pound for every extra pound you earn. Prime Minister Andy Burnham said an unpaid carer picking up an extra shift will find life a little easier. The payment itself is rising too. From April, Carer's Allowance goes up to eighty six pounds forty five a week. And the earnings limit rises to two hundred and four pounds a week, the first time it has ever crossed two hundred. The government is also reviewing more than two hundred and thirty thousand old overpayment cases, and thousands of carers could see past debts reduced or cancelled. To qualify, you must be at least sixteen, not in full time education, and care for someone on a qualifying disability benefit. But reports say the new taper could take years to fully arrive.
