Used in different forms across early modern Europe, the boot was designed to compress a prisoner’s lower leg through tightening metal or wooden restraints. As executioners increased the pressure, victims could suffer devastating injuries, including broken bones. These devices were used during interrogations in which authorities attempted to force prisoners to reveal information or confess. One documented victim was James Mitchell, a Scottish Covenanter preacher who endured torture with the boot in seventeenth-century Scotland. His case became a chilling example of the extreme methods authorities were willing to use against suspected enemies. But the Spanish Boot raises an even more disturbing question: Could a confession extracted through unbearable pain ever be trusted? Under torture, innocent people might confess simply to make the suffering stop.
