How to start a G-Tube Infinity Pump: Mackenzie’s Version. I say Mackenzie’s version because everyone who uses a feeding pump does it a little bit differently! I am in no way a GI doctor, BUT- I have two tubie kiddos, so I feel pretty confident in my G-Tube skills 💪🏻 We change the feeding bag daily (when supplies allow… when the tariffs were first initiated we had a shortage of bags 🤦🏻‍♀️). We flush the bag with warm water between feeds to clean it out and prevent bacteria from formula sitting in the tube for a prolonged period of time. Both of my kiddos are blessed with digestive systems that can tolerate a relatively fast rate of formula intake - not everyone can tolerate formula entering their stomach so quickly. We don’t usually have to change the rate unless one of them is sick or coming out of anesthesia. Mackenzie gets her formula through a pump as needed, and most days we don’t even need to run it through the pump! If she drinks most of her formula by mouth we just finish what she doesn’t eat via syringe. But today she wasn’t interested in eating formula after only 1 oz, so pump feeding it is! Just because she doesn’t eat all of her formula by mouth doesn’t mean she can’t. It also doesn’t mean she can’t eat other foods by mouth. Because of her Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB), we take her lead with feeds. If she doesn’t want to eat by mouth it could very well be because something internally is hurting. So instead of pushing her through unnecessary pain (and potentially worsening a blister in her esophagus), we use the g-tube to ensure her nutrition. If she asks for food, we give it (this morning she wanted yogurt and bananas). It doesn’t mean she’ll eat a lot of it, but we want her to enjoy the taste and experience of food without the pressure. Today I’m pretty sure something is hurting her internally because she tried her food and spit much of it out, which can indicate a blister I can’t see. We’ll continue to take her lead and see what she can tolerate! Also- just to be clear my kiddos have g-tubes, not j-tubes. The rules are very different if kids are getting fed in their intestines (j-tubes) instead of their stomachs (g-tubes). #tubefed #gtube #feeding #fedisbest #medicallycomplex
