A lot of producers make the mistake of setting a compressor by looking at the gain reduction meter. But compression is something you should hear, not just see. Here’s a simple trick: First, bypass the compressor. Listen to the original sound and pay attention to the attack, body, and movement. Then turn the compressor back on. Now ask yourself: Is the attack getting softer? If yes, your compressor is catching the initial transient. Is the sound becoming more consistent? That means the compressor is controlling the dynamics. Does the track feel like it’s pumping or breathing? Your attack and release might be reacting too much to the signal. And here’s the most important part: Match the volume. If the compressed signal is louder, your brain will probably think it sounds better — even if it doesn’t. So level-match the compressor to the bypassed signal, then listen again. Don’t ask, “Does it sound louder?” Ask: “What changed?” That’s how you start hearing compression like a producer instead of just watching the meter. #afrobeatinstrumental #mixingtipsandtricks #mixingtips
