They are eating with their hands, quickly, without talking because when you eat rice with no source, you swallow fast so you don't taste the emptiness. The youngest girl in the green dress has the smallest plate. She puts rice in her mouth and looks at her mother. She wants to ask "Mama, where is the source?" but she has already learned not to ask. She has asked before and her mother cried. So today there is rice. But there is no money left for beans. No money for cooking oil. No money for tomatoes to make a sauce. So she boiled water, put the rice in, and said: "Eat, my children." And they ate. Because hungry children don't ask for source. They just eat to stop the pain in their stomachs. The boy in the pink shirt the 11-year-old father he eats last. He makes sure all his sisters have eaten first. He eats the burnt rice at the bottom of the saucepan and says I am full. This is what poverty does in Mukono Central. Plain rice with no source is not a meal. It is survival. Sawula Children's Foundation found them today eating like this.
