A 20-year-old woman in Kawasaki called the police nine times in eleven days about her ex-boyfriend. Three of those calls were urgent: he was standing outside her house. The police wrote none of it down, told no supervisor, and advised her to stop contacting him. Eleven days after the first call, Asahi Okazaki was gone. A window at her home was smashed. The ex, Hideyuki Shirai, a 27-year-old rapper, was interviewed seven times. Officers walked through his house three times without a warrant and found nothing. His own family told police in January they thought he’d killed her. A friend had video of him outside her home eight days before she vanished. Nothing happened for four months. In mid-April he flew to America. On April 30 police finally searched the house with a warrant and found her remains in a bag under the floorboards — partly burned, dead for over a month. He was arrested at Haneda Airport flying back from the US and later indicted for murder. Five months after that, the Kanagawa police chief bowed on camera and called the response “inadequate and inappropriate.” Her family’s answer: the report is full of lies, and her father says he will never forgive them.
