@useinkling: orange peel has an alkene in it, and one rule tells you where HBr adds. search "inkling orgo" on the App Store or go to tryinkling.app alkene + HBr, where does the H go, for orgo 1 midterm 2 alkene addition: step 1, the C=C of the alkene is the electron-rich part, so its pi bond takes the H+ first. that is the slow step and it leaves a carbocation. the H goes to the alkene carbon that already has more H's, which puts the + on the more substituted carbon, because a 3° carbocation is more stable than a 2°, and a 2° more than a 1°. step 2, Br- grabs the +, so the Br ends up on the more substituted carbon. that is Markovnikov. propene + HBr gives 2-bromopropane (a 2° carbocation), not 1-bromopropane (it would need a 1° one), and 1-methylcyclohexene + HBr gives 1-bromo-1-methylcyclohexane (a 3° carbocation). slide 5 is the 3 traps 🧐 HBr with peroxides (ROOR, or light) flips it to anti-Markovnikov, the carbocation can shift first (3-methylbut-1-ene + HCl gives mostly 2-chloro-2-methylbutane after a hydride shift, not the one you would draw), and H2O with H2SO4 follows the same rule while hydroboration (BH3 then H2O2) does the opposite, so check the reagent first. slide 6 is today's quiz in the app (orange peel) 👀 saved this? practice quizzes like it in the app which trap would you have fallen for? 👇#ochem#organicchemistry#alkenes#studytok#examprep #ochem
