@forhospicenurses: Tips for Hospice Nurses: Discharge for Cause. I might go on a bit of a rant in this video because I feel strongly about this. Discharge for cause should be very rare, and in my opinion, there are really only two valid, ethical reasons: 1. The patient is very mobile and never home, making it impossible to meet the required 14-day visit. 2. The environment is unsafe and puts you at personal risk. That’s it. Not because the patient is “non-compliant.” Not because the family is hard to deal with. Not because someone is smoking in the home. We are hospice … we meet patients where they are, and we flex our care around them, not the other way around. We figure out solutions so we can support our patients with kindness and dignity. In this video, I share a real scenario that triggered this conversation - if you have thoughts, whether you agree or disagree, please share them. We need to be talking about this. Ya’ll be safe out there! I love you guys … xoxo ~ Shelley 💕 #TipsForHospiceNurses #ForHospiceNurses #ShelleyHenry #Amity #Discharge

Do you discharge when a patient goes to the hospital? Example: patient falls and breaks their hip. Patient is sent to the hospital and admitted for surgical intervention.

Patients have the right to live their lives as they choose, even when those choices differ from what others think is best. Hospice is supposed to be about dignity, autonomy, comfort, and quality of life. Corporate hospice has become so focused on policies, numbers, and profits that the patient-centered philosophy of hospice often gets lost.
