The prompt says ‘body count doesn’t matter,’ but these studies found that it was associated with oral HPV and divorce. 1) Gillison et al., ‘Prevalence of oral HPV infection in the United States, 2009–2010’ (JAMA, 2012), found more partners were associated with higher oral HPV prevalence (online-first PDF, p. E1, abstract results). 2) Smith and Wolfinger, ‘Re-examining the link between premarital sex and divorce’ (Journal of Family Issues, 2024), found about 3x the modeled divorce odds for people with 9+ premarital partners compared with those whose only premarital partner was their eventual spouse (p. 683, results paragraph 3). These are associations, not proof of causation. The predictable replies are ‘safe sex,’ ‘divorce is good’ and ‘experience improves judgment.’ But naming a precaution doesn’t establish that an association disappears, liking an outcome doesn’t make it irrelevant, and proposing an explanation doesn’t prove it. What’s the case for ‘body count doesn’t matter’ given these findings?
