@seanwillers: I didn’t become dependent on alcohol overnight. It happened slowly. IN THE BEGINNING, NOTHING LOOKED WRONG. I drank with friends, at parties and on weekends. I wasn’t drinking every day. Whenever I thought about addiction, I told myself, “That’s definitely not me.” BUT MY BRAIN WAS LEARNING TO WANT THAT FEELING AGAIN. Alcohol affects the brain’s reward system. I started associating drinking with relaxation, confidence and having a good time. Eventually, reaching for a drink became my automatic response. SLOWLY, MY OWN DRINKING RULES STARTED CHANGING. A few drinks at the weekend became heavier sessions. Then drinking started creeping into other parts of my week. I’d set limits, break them and promise myself I’d do better next time. THEN I BECAME PROUD THAT I COULD “HANDLE MORE”. I could drink more without feeling as drunk. I thought that meant I was in control. But that was tolerance. My body had adapted, and needing more wasn’t something to be proud of. EVENTUALLY, ALCOHOL HAD A REASON FOR EVERY MOOD. Celebrating? Drink. Stressed from work? Drink. Had a difficult week? Drink. Finally got some time to myself? Drink. Alcohol had become my answer to everything I didn’t know how to handle differently. AND BECAUSE MY LIFE STILL LOOKED NORMAL, I KEPT MISSING IT. I was working. Meeting responsibilities. Getting through the week. So I kept telling myself I was fine. But functioning doesn’t mean your drinking is under control. HERE’S WHAT I WISH I’D UNDERSTOOD SOONER. You don’t have to drink every day to have an unhealthy relationship with alcohol. Ask yourself: Am I drinking more than I intended? Do I keep breaking promises to cut back? Is alcohol affecting my sleep, training, relationships or mental health? If you’re recognising these patterns, start paying attention to your triggers, find healthier ways to switch off and get support. Taking back control starts with recognising what’s actually happening. If you’re tired of repeating the same drinking cycle, Check the link in my bio for my free guide on understanding your drinking and breaking the cycle.
