@_cgxan: 𝗣𝗢𝗩: 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗽𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗻𝗮 𝗕𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗻 𝗽𝗮𝗹𝗮 𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗻𝗮𝗸𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗻𝗶𝘆𝗮 BT corn contains a gene from a bacterium called 𝘉𝘢𝘤𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘶𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘴 (Bt), which produces proteins known as Cry proteins. These proteins help protect corn from certain harmful insects by targeting their digestive systems. But why is Bt corn safe for humans? When an insect pest eats Bt corn, the Cry proteins become active in its gut and bind to specific receptors in its intestinal lining. This damages the gut, stops the insect from feeding properly, and eventually causes its death. Humans, on the other hand, do not have the same specific gut receptors targeted by these proteins. Our digestive system can also break down these proteins, which is why approved Bt corn is considered safe to eat following proper food safety assessments. So, humans can chill and enjoy their Bt corn, but pest insects? Best of luck, bestie!
