Here in Florida, we have predominantly sandy soil, which can make growing vegetables a little more challenging. According to UF/IFAS, Florida’s sandy soils generally have low water-holding capacity and struggle to retain nutrients, meaning water and essential nutrients can move through the soil relatively quickly. Now, does that mean you CAN’T grow vegetables directly in Florida’s native soil? Absolutely not! With proper soil amendments, consistent fertilization, and good soil management, you can grow a productive garden right in the ground. However, I personally prefer raised beds because they give me greater control over my growing environment. One of my favorite raised bed brands is Vego Garden! Their raised beds are made from VZ 2.0 steel, which features a protective zinc, magnesium, and aluminum coating designed to resist rust and corrosion, making them a great option for Florida’s humid climate. The material also reflects sunlight rather than absorbing as much heat, which helps reduce heat buildup along the sides of the beds during our HOT Florida summers! #VegetableGardening
