@conscious.app: This is proof that some companies never learn their lesson. Earlier this month, a TikTok creator was scrolling Abercrombie's website and noticed something off about the sweaters. The men's section had a whole line of 100% merino wool. The women's section was mostly wool blends. So she compared two of them. The women's Merino Wool-Blend Polo Sweater costs $95, and it's 66% nylon, 30% wool and 4% elastane. Nylon and elastane are plastics made from oil, so the sweater sold to women as merino is about 70% plastic. The men's 100% merino wool sweater is exactly that, all wool. It also costs $95. Her video passed 2 million views, and the comments filled up with two words: pink tax. That's when women pay more for similar products, or the same price for less. A 2015 New York City study of nearly 800 products found women's clothing cost about 8% more than men's on average. The day after her video, Abercrombie ran a sale of up to 30% off select sweaters. There's no evidence the two were connected, and she still said that at any price, it's a garbage piece of clothing. And this isn't new for Abercrombie. In 2013, it didn't stock women's XL or XXL, while men's sizes went up to XXL. In 2005, it sold shirts that said "Who needs brains when you have these?" until a group of teenage girls organized a boycott and the company pulled some of them.
