🚨 Hansi Flick on Lamine Yamal’s goal against Alaves and why Barcelona are so difficult to defend against: “I was watching the Alaves defenders before Lamine scored, and I could understand what they were trying to do. They had already conceded a goal where Fermin made a run, Pedri found him, and Raphinha finished. There was too much space, and they knew it. So this time, they were more careful. They stayed deeper. They kept more players around the penalty area. They didn’t want us making those runs behind them again. And I thought, okay, let’s see how they deal with this. Because that’s the interesting thing about football. Sometimes you correct one problem and discover you’ve created another. We kept moving the ball around their penalty area. Left, right, back again. They were following it, adjusting their positions, making sure nobody could run behind them. From the outside, maybe it looked like nothing was happening. But something was happening. Every time we passed the ball, somebody had to make a decision. Do I move towards the ball? Do I stay with my man? Do I close the space? And when you keep asking defenders those questions, eventually somebody has to answer one of them a little too late. Then Cancelo gets the ball. And this is what I liked about the goal. He doesn’t need to play a spectacular pass through six players. He sees an opportunity and passes the ball into the right area. Now, if you’re defending, perhaps you’re expecting Lamine to control it. That’s the normal thing. The ball is slightly in the air, so you think he’ll take a touch, bring it down, and then you’ll have a moment to close him. But Lamine doesn’t give you that moment. He strikes it immediately. And the ball is in the net. I looked at the defenders afterwards, and I thought, what could they have done differently? For the first goal, they could say they should have defended higher or followed the run. For this goal, they could say they should have closed Lamine down. But when? They were already defending deep. They had players around the box. They were trying to cover the spaces. And still, we found a way. That’s what I want from my team. I don’t want 11 players waiting for one player to produce something special. I want everybody to understand that they can be part of creating the opportunity. Pedri sees a run, he plays the pass. Fermin sees Raphinha moving, he finds him. Cancelo sees Lamine in a position to receive, he gives him the ball. And Lamine sees the goal. Sometimes the difference is that simple. People think these goals happen because the defenders are poor. I don’t agree. You can defend very well and still concede when the opponent makes the right decisions quickly enough. The difficult thing for Alaves is that they couldn’t defend both goals in exactly the same way. If they left space, we could run into it. If they closed the space, we could keep the ball, move them around and find another solution. And when Lamine decides to shoot without taking a touch, there isn’t much time left to do anything. That’s the football I enjoy. Not because every attack ends with a goal. It doesn’t. But because the players are constantly thinking, constantly recognising what the opposition is giving them. I think the Alaves defenders will watch the goals again and discuss what they could have done. That’s normal. But I hope my players watch them too, because there’s an important lesson there. The first goal came because we recognised space behind the defence. One of the next goals came because we recognised an opportunity in front of it. You don’t need the opposition to make the same mistake twice. You need to be good enough to find a different answer.” [ This is the source @ChinoUTD ]#lamineyamal #barcelona #barca #creatorsearchinsights #capcut
