The place is called Kandovan. Thousands of years ago, Sahand erupted and buried this valley under a layer of volcanic ash more than 300 feet thick. Over centuries, rain and melting snow carved that soft stone into hundreds of towering cones, some over 100 feet tall. People hollowed them out from the inside, building homes two to four floors high — animals on the ground level, families above. Most doorways face south to catch the low winter sun, and residents swear the thick rock keeps them warm in winter and cool in summer, like a natural thermostat. What's wild is that even the streets were once the water channels running between the cones. Geologists compare Kandovan to Cappadocia in Turkey, but unlike Cappadocia's abandoned caves, this village is still alive today — with running water, electricity, and hundreds of people who've never wanted to leave.
