Secrets. Kids are not allowed to have secrets. Surprises have a timer on them and can be fun. Secrets use words like always, never, must, have to and no timeframe. Kids and grown ups CANNOT have secrets together. A grown up who wants a secret is UNSAFE.

You cannot stress enough to Children that 1) adults should not be asking them to keep secrets EVER. 2) If a friend tells them a secret about an adult, it's okay for them to share with their own safe adult so intervention like this can happen quickly.

I was 5 in kindergarten when a teacher came to ask me and my bff 6yo, she lived next door, a series of questions. My friend shut down, got up and walked away. The teacher asked me if I knew why my friend had changed. I started telling her the things that I'd seen and the "rules" that her dad had in their house regarding our playdates. She hugged me got up immediately and left. The next day the cops raided his house and arrested him. I'm 35 now, it wasn't up until a few years ago that my mind released the repressed memories of what was really happening. Grooming is absolutely real. I hadn't realized at that age not only was I saving my friend but myself as well. When he is old enough to understand, your son will know the impact that one conversation he had with you had. To him he didn't do anything but he did the one and only thing that was literally EVERYTHING.
