several years ago I was sitting in a Sunday school class of church and they were discussing Genesis. I had this moment and insight where I realized it all actually made much more sense if it was taken figuratively rather than trying to force historicity into the text. I made that comment thinking other people would find it insightful as well. to the surprise of this very young and very naive boy my insight was not appreciated and the reaction was very negative and swept through the entire classroom. that was one of the first moments when I started to wonder if I was in the right place.
