Melvin Lindsey sat his mother down to tell her he had AIDS. She had walked in the door carrying delicatessen meats: pastrami, corned beef, ham. He said, "Momma, I have AIDS." She said, "Oh, baby, they told me already." The microphone was at his bedside. Room at Sibley Memorial in Washington, late March 1992. Melvin Lindsey was 36 years old and dying of AIDS. The Kaposi sarcoma lesions had spread across his face and arms by then. He had spent months trying to cover them up before he decided to stop covering, and now he was in the hospital and the whole city knew. He picked up the microphone and did what he had been doing for nearly sixteen years. He kept people company in the night. His voice came through WHUR-FM the way it always had. Soft and close and unhurried. The phones lit up. Listeners called in from bedrooms and kitchens and cars pulled over on the side of the road, and every single one of them said the same thing. They loved him. Karen Campbell, the WHUR reporter running the interview from the studio, said later that nobody called with a negative word. Everybody was encouraging. There was laughter. He talked openly about the disease he was fighting. He talked a long time about his family. Somebody had brought him apple pie. Someone else brought lasagna. Somebody made brownies. He told listeners that people had been stopping him at the grocery store just to wish him well. "People have done unrealistic things to show their love," he said. "I really have appreciated." He was getting more and more faith, he said, and he could not pinpoint what was making it grow. Maybe it was the love and the people around him. He said he was not afraid to die. Then he put on one more record. It was Gladys Knight and the Pips. "The Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me." Same song he had signed off with in 1985 when he left this same station the first time. Four days later he was gone. To understand how that room came to hold him, the phone lines and the apple pie and the faith, you go back to a Sunday night in May 1976, nearly sixteen years earlier. #blackexcellence #fyp #fy #quietstorm #melvinlindsey
