Canyen Heimuli :
I’ve worked at polling-focused market research firms for about 7 years: I can tell you the anxiety is real, and just about the way you described. All the way back in 2020, we already saw warnings that there was an unobserved, confounding factor that was both 1) correlated with not answering surveys, and 2) correlated with voting red. We had, at the time, little way to even conceptualize this issue, let alone a way to measure it. Was it an issue of fundamental distrust in institutions and social conventions? And if so, how do you measure that in a person? And what’s the natural rate of incidence of this attitude in the US? I wish it weren’t so, but you’re right about the consequences of this for pollsters. Time was that Ann Seltzer was the gold standard in polling. In 2024, they wrongly predicted a state-level election, and now they’re out of business. So yeah: not sure what that all means for us expect, maybe, if your crazy uncle is mad about the state of the country, maybe tell him to take a survey about it. Please?
