🌪️ What are Varicose Veins? 🦵🏿 Inside the veins that carry blood back toward our heart, there are tiny valves. The main function of these valves is to prevent blood from flowing backward due to gravity. However, when these valves become weak for some reason, blood gets pulled down by gravity and begins to pool in one place. As a result, the veins swell, twist, and bulge out through the surface of the skin. This condition is known as Varicose Veins. It is most commonly seen in the legs and calf areas. 🦵🏿 Main Symptoms 〰️ Bulging veins: Twisted and swollen veins on the legs that appear dark blue or purple. 〰️ Pain and heaviness in the legs: Feeling severe fatigue, a burning sensation, or pain in the legs after standing for a long time. 〰️ Swelling: Legs becoming swollen toward the evening. 〰️ Skin changes: Itching in the area where the veins are, the skin turning a darker color (dark brown), or becoming dry. 〰️ Muscle cramps: Experiencing muscle cramps (specifically in the calves) during the night. 🦵🏿 Causes and Risk Factors 〰️ Prolonged standing or sitting: This is more commonly seen among teachers, security guards, garment factory workers, and office workers who sit continuously for long hours. 〰️ Aging: As we age, the strength of the valves inside the veins decreases. 〰️ Pregnancy: The pressure exerted on leg veins due to hormonal changes and the weight of the uterus during pregnancy. 〰️ Obesity: Excess body weight puts immense pressure on the leg veins. 〰️ Genetics: If close family members have this condition, your chances of developing it are much higher. 🦵🏿 How to Manage and Prevent It? 〰️ Change your posture frequently: If you are standing or sitting continuously, take a short walk for at least a few moments every 30 minutes. 〰️ Elevate your legs: When resting or sleeping, place a pillow under your legs so they are resting slightly higher than heart level. 〰️ Stay active: Light exercises like walking and swimming help keep blood circulation in the legs functioning properly. 〰️ Control your body weight: Maintain a suitable body weight by eating a nutritious diet. 〰️ Reduce the use of tight clothes and high heels: Avoid wearing tight clothing that obstructs blood flow to the legs. 🦵🏿 Using Compression Stockings (specialized socks) under medical advice can help speed up blood circulation in the legs and control both pain and swelling. 🦵🏿 When should you see a doctor? 〰️ Consult a Vascular or General Surgeon and follow an appropriate treatment plan. 〰️ If the pain or swelling in your legs worsens day by day. 〰️ If the skin over the affected area develops ulcers (sores) that do not heal. 〰️ If a surface vein bursts and begins to bleed (Immediately press a clean piece of cloth firmly over the wound, elevate your leg, and rush to a hospital).
